Our graduate programme, open to all university graduates, supports graduates in achieving professional qualifications in the early stages of their career within Chartered Surveying and Chartered Planning. The Early Careers Scheme includes a range of different internal, structured training days with an opportunity to meet other graduates from across the business, The scheme also includes access to a dedicated “Doctor” or mentor to support individuals throughout their training as well as the appointment of a supervisor and counsellor to each candidate to assist them further and ensure candidates remain on track throughout their training.

The Early Careers team also run a full mock Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) interview and paperwork reviews. The APC exam, essential for becoming a chartered surveyor or planner, ensures candidates meet high professional standards and obtain sufficient experience to begin their career within the professional world.

In July 2023, Kate Wesson became a part of our utilities and infrastructure team at the Newark office. Reflecting on her journey, she shared: “I pursued wildlife conservation at Nottingham Trent University, which led me to join from a non-traditional academic background. During an early career fair at university, I had limited knowledge about Fisher German and the role of a surveyor. However, the graduate program has been instrumental in helping me grasp the responsibilities of a surveyor within the utility industry, thereby expanding my understanding of the business.”

Thomas Spawforth joined our building consultancy team as a graduate in September 2023. He followed the pathway to do Architecture at Reading University starting in 2020. He said: I come from a rural background lifestyle; my property interests helped me to discover surveying. I had volunteered and also taken part in the Insights Programme, and I heard of the graduate scheme from a friend who had completed a summer placement. The scheme enables me to work and gain real-life experience as well as gaining my APC.”

Harriet Cooper spent two years living and working in Australia and when she came back to the UK, she decided she wanted to do a rural property course. In 2020, she started at the Royal Agricultural University to study Rural Land Management. She graduated in 2023 and joined us in September 2023 as a graduate in our rural property management team after doing a summer placement after her first and second years of university.

Harriet said: “The summer placements gave me a real insight into the company and first-hand experience as to what is involved in rural property management.  Since then, I have learnt this sector is so much more and whilst I still assist on a traditional estate, I have also had the opportunity to get involved with corporate clients with multi-disciplinary portfolios including agricultural, residential and commercial properties. There is no typical day. The work is so varied, and this is one of the things I love most about the job.”

He joined us in September 2023 after completing a summer placement at our office in Worcester where he is originally from. He graduated from the University of Reading in 2023 after studying BSc Investment & Finance in Property. He was introduced to the summer placement scheme by a career advisor at the university. Sam explained: “I had heard of Fisher German and had no idea how diverse they were until I did my research. The prospect of exposure to such a wide variety of assets was exciting. This coupled with a great team and synergy across offices made me want to join.

“I am particularly interested in the industrial and investment markets, but the rotation system has already helped me learn more Central London Agency department and I am now in the valuations team. The summer placement scheme was a great insight and helped me complete my studies in the final year of university without having to take a year out. I was treated as if I were a graduate and given the freedom to pursue my deals whilst also having great mentorship from experienced surveyors.”

Graduate Planner, Isabelle Holliday, joined us in April 2023, she said: “I always wanted a career in planning, and I knew of Fisher German and their graduate scheme. I enjoyed the interview process, and the early careers team kept me updated on the progress of my application, which is something I learned not a lot of companies do. I'm gradually getting more responsibility at a pace that suits me. My job is mainly desk-based which I love and the tasks I get given are never the same. I joined the Insight programme, and I would recommend anyone to do it, it is a good experience to meet the team, ask questions and learn about the wider industry.”
