Applications are now open for the next Insight Programme. This fully virtual programme is designed for students not studying a property-related subject at university but interested in surveying or planning.

The Insight Programme aims to provide a foundational understanding of services and careers within the planning and surveying industry. By attracting diverse candidates, the programme helps us expand and diversify our talent pool beyond the usual university students studying related subjects.

Mo Cox, our Early Careers Talent Advisor, explained: “So many non-cognate students interviewed for graduate roles were highly talented but struggled to articulate their career aspirations due to limited knowledge. Our Insight Programme offers these individuals a chance to gain a real understanding of the industry, while also allowing us to identify talent and better understand the non-cognate graduate market.”

The programme is designed to be interactive and engaging, featuring presentations, talks, personal development training, group and individual tasks, and access to a buddy for a meaningful professional experience. The five-day programme is delivered virtually, allowing students from anywhere in the UK to participate.

Mo added: “We have received great feedback from previous Insight Programme attendees. Some were initially interested in a property career but were unsure about the roles within different sectors. The programme helps them understand the variety within the industry and empowers them to define their career goals. Four participants from previous programmes have been offered graduate roles, and five others secured summer placements with us, demonstrating the programme’s effectiveness in supporting career progression.”

Graduate Surveyor Rob Parry, based in our London office, joined our graduate programme in 2023 after graduating from Newcastle University. He entered through a non-cognate pathway and is now pursuing a part-time Real Estate MSc at London South Bank University to qualify for the APC exam in autumn 2025. Rob said: “I initially had an interest in construction and planning due to my background in the building trade, but after gaining work experience in the commercial market, I realized my career aligned more with real estate. The Insight Programme provided a comprehensive introduction to surveying and planning for non-cognate students, giving me a clear understanding of what it’s like to work at Fisher German.”

Harriet Coupe, who completed the Insight Programme and now works as a graduate surveyor in our minerals department, said: “The Insight Programme was invaluable in helping me understand the different industry sectors and the day-to-day work of surveyors. It also offered a great opportunity to learn more about Fisher German and speak with people across the business, which informed my career decisions. I’d recommend the Insight Programme to anyone interested in the property industry.”

Gaia Sugden, a Business Economics student at Sheffield Hallam University, is undertaking a placement year at our Doncaster office in the utilities and infrastructure team. She applied to the Insight Programme to learn more about Fisher German and explore career opportunities. Gaia said: “As a non-cognate student, I was unsure about my options after graduation. The programme provided valuable knowledge and preparation for my placement year, allowing me to ask questions and learn from professionals in different parts of the firm.”

The programme will run for three days from 30 September to 2 October 2024. To apply, submit your CV and a cover letter via our website, explaining why you wish to attend and what you hope to gain from the programme. Applications close at midnight on 8 September 2024.
